The Fall 2012 Runways were full of hairstyles that any woman could wear and look fabulous! Whether you like your hair up or down, flat or tall, there was truly something for everyone. Among the many different designers, a few styles stood out as being the hottest trends for fall and I am going to break them down so you too can be runway ready this season!

Bouffants
The classic bouffant is making an epic comeback this season with most designers choosing the perfectly coiffed and smooth look for their high haired models. More often than not, bouffants were adorned with a headband of one type or another. To pull off this look, you’ll need some stiff hairspray, a teasing comb, and lots of pins. If you decide to give this a try, think Sophia Loren or Mad Men for styling inspiration, and avoid Snooki territory.

Low Volume
On the other end of the extreme, low volume hair is also a big deal this season. Designers who had their models’ hair styled down did not go for the high volume height and waves of previous seasons. This year was all about how low can you go with some designers going as fair as to have their models’ hair matted to their heads. Now I would not try that look on the street, but you can definitely get in on low volume style, like the model above, especially if you have straight or fine hair. If you’re going to give it a try, consider investing in a smoothing or shine serum to keep the unwanted frizz and volume at bay.

Perfect Ponytails
The pony tail is the perennial go to hair style. They were all over the fall runways, but before you get too excited, keep in mind these pony tails are not your everyday just going to pull my hair back and run to the gym look. The pony tails gracing the runway were all about perfection. Smooth, sleek, and not a single flyaway in sight, this look requires a little bit of patience and, depending on your hair type, a whole lot of product. To pull off this look, use a bristle brush, some light weight hairspray, and some shine or smoothing serum. You may even want to use a flat iron to give the the pony tail that perfectly placed look.

Twists & Braids
Twists and braids of all sorts were also very popular on the Fall 2012 runways. Although some looks, like the one above, require some pretty hefty hair skills, more casual braids and twists will also be popular this season and much easier to pull off. As with any style, a little practice goes a long way. Try finding a video tutorial of the exact twist or braid you would like to replicate and be sure to give yourself enough time to get the style right (like not ten minutes before you’re supposed to be out the door for work).

Buns
Buns! Another classic that will never go out of style. As with the other updos this season, this year’s buns are all about precision (think sophisticated ballerina, not I just tied my hair back while driving). Many of the buns on the fall runway also featured severe side parts and were worn low on the head as shown above. To make this work, you’ll need to same tools as for a pony tail, plus some pins.
I am always thrilled when the season’s runway hair looks are styles you could actually wear on the street (as opposed to something it looks like a bird would nest in). It’s great style inspiration for an overall look and I will definitely be trying my hand at some twists and bouffants this season. Which runways looks will you be taking for a test run?
