When I met Felicia Day way back in 2003, she’d just come off a stint in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s seventh season. She hadn’t done her web series The Guild or her recurring roles on Eureka and Supernatural yet, and it’s been interesting watching as her career has taken off and more and more people recognize who she is. Of course, part of that notoriety comes from her YouTube channel, Geek & Sundry, which launched in 2012. The channel expanded from only a few unscripted shows to an enormous variety of series, both unscripted and scripted. They even launched a second channel last year in order to feature additional vlogs and at the most recent San Diego Comic Con, the website announced even more shows to add to its already busy lineup.

One of those new shows is the scripted web series Caper, which is a comedy about superheroes who are forced to turn to a life of crime in order to pay rent. It sounds to me like a mix of Leverage and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which isn’t as surprising as it may seem at first glance when you start to consider who’s involved.

The Dr. Horrible connection comes from Felicia Day herself. She had a starring role in Joss Whedon’s musical web series about aspiring super villain Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) and his arch-enemy Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). However, Day probably won’t be that involved in the series, if at all.

The Leverage connection comes through in two ways. First, the co-creator of Caper, Amy Berg, previously wrote for Leverage, a television show about a group of criminals who come together to steal from the rich to give to the poor. Second, actress Beth Riesgraf played thief Parker on Leverage and will play one of the four superheroes at the heart of Caper.

The other three heroes will be played by Abby Miller (Justified), Harry Shum, Jr. (Glee) and Hartley Sawyer (The Young and the Restless).

Given the actors involved and Berg’s work on shows like All That and Eureka, you should expect the show to have a lot of laughs. The superhero element sounds intriguing too, especially the heroes will have to hide their criminal activities from the world. And of course, since the characters all share an apartment, I’d expect a healthy dose of friendship to be thrown into the mix too.

According to the series’ Twitter account, filming wrapped on the show in November, and it’s expected to premiere on the Geek & Sundry channel later this month or next month. You should definitely check it out when it does.

To tide you over in the meantime, I’d check out Leverage, if you’re most interested in the heist angle, or Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, if you’re more interested in the superhero/villain angle. Or you can do one better and check them both out. They’ll be well worth your time.

You can also go to Geek & Sundry’s YouTube channel and watch their current shows while you wait. Get updates on the progress of Caper and when you can expect it to be released on the Geek & Sundry website, via their Twitter account, or via Amy Berg’s Twitter account.
